Stress and Belly Fat

In today’s modern world, there are many things that can stress us out.

We often run from place to place, and our schedules are jam-packed.

When you’re running on stress, this releases stress hormones throughout your body.

Did you know that one of those stress hormones is a hormone called “cortisol”?

It’s weird when you learn about how this happens, but once you understand it, you will be happy to know why it happens.

  1. Your mind creates a stressful thought
    When you have a stressful thought, this tells your body that you are in “fight or flight” mode. This is our survival mode that has evolved over millions of years to protect us from dangerous situations.
  2. Cortisol is released from your adrenal glands
    Your adrenal glands are small glands located on top of the kidneys and they are responsible for releasing cortisol when your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. Cortisol is designed to give you a quick burst of energy and makes your brain alert. This is great for stressful situations because you need to think fast and move quickly.
  3. More Belly Fat can be stored
    When your body and brain are in survival mode, all the blood rushes to your muscles and brain in order to prepare for quick action. The blood that would normally be diverted to your digestive organs is diverted away. This causes problems with your digestion and can lead to more belly fat storage.

Once you start to understand how stress can have an impact on the hormones in your body, it’s not so strange to see how more belly fat can be created. The great news is that you don’t have to quit your life or run away from your job in order to stop being stressed. There are simple tools you can follow today to start eliminating the stress from your life.

Here are some stress-reducing tools:

1. Take 3 slow deep breaths – in through your nose and out through your mouth.

2. Take a long, hot bubble bath

3. Go for walk.

4. Dance in your living room.

5. Play with children

6. Get 20 minutes of exercise

7. Remember that life is a journey. Don’t take the day-to-day stressors so seriously.

8. Laugh with a good friend or watch a funny movie

… these are just a few ways that you can relieve your stress.
